Generally you sign-up for monthly membership and then create a list of movies that you want to rent. This is an ordered ‘queue’ if you like. You rate each movie on how quickly you want to see it, and then the company will post that DVD to you as soon as it’s available. If they can’t send you your first choice, then they send you the 2nd, and so on. Now methods include renting movies on a per movie rate rather than monthly membership.
LoveFilm is probably the best known DVD rental company in the UK these days - in fact, even Amazon UK now refer people looking to rent movies directly to LoveFilm rather than offer their own service!
